Justin + Mary’s Lighting Intensive rocked my socks off, as those two normally do. I had a taste of their lighting techniques at last year’s Boston Walk Thru A Wedding Workshop but this was a more intensive session to provide techniques & tips about using flash & different lighting techniques giving you hands on experience. I’m a visual hands-on type of girl so being able to actually see and try out different lighting scenarios with trial & error helped me tremendously. Not to mention I panicked when my flash wouldn’t function & Justin very patiently checked it over, only to discover that it wasn’t connected well. Duh, I felt like an idiot for my premature panic attack yet he assured me it happens. Just another of the reasons I adore Justin & Mary. Not only are they so giving of their knowledge & time, but the only questions that are silly are the ones you don’t ask. The Dynamic Duo as I like to refer to them.

Lighting is something that I distanced myself from at first, believing that I needed/wanted to be a “natural light” photographer – so any artificial light was the devil, going against all laws of natural light. Over the past year or more I have studied other’s photographs that I love, noticing that it was the lighting that created the atmosphere in many of my favorites. So, I started tinkering with flash, trying to make it as natural as possible. Then came 2 workshops I attended, Venn Workshops & Justin + Mary’s Walk Thru a Wedding, that demonstrated use of flash & lighting set ups. I began to loosen up with my thoughts on flash & lighting in general, deciding to play with it more this year, possibly incorporating a light set up at wedding receptions.

I was so super excited when I heard they were coming to Richmond & when asked what I wanted for my birthday I said “a ticket to a photography workshop”, so  I was gifted this incredible workshop by some fabulous family & friends making it the the best birthday gift!

There are a few more dates for the J&M Lighting Intensive so use the code “alum50” to save $50 off your seat!

All of these images are SOOC (except the b&w of course).
