What does it mean to be a bridesmaid? Well for starters, you should see it for the honor that it is to stand beside your friend, showing your support and love for the happy couple. It’s sure to include alot of celebration, dancing & good times but it’s not a responsibility to be taken lightly. Being a maid or matron of honor is an even higher standard. It’s not all lookin’ pretty & smiling for 1000 photos (although that’s included).

An awesome bridesmaid:

Doesn’t make it about her. She realizes that it’s the Bride & Grooms day. Plain and simple.

Doesn’t complain. She should openly talk about her budget and what she will be able to participate in to the Bride.

Communicates clearly.

Gives her honest, yet kind opinions when asked. Being able to wear your dress again is a huge bonus, but really – is it that big of an dealbreak when it comes to your friend’s big day?

Helps to mediate other members of the bridal party or family members when necessary.

Helps & participates in whatever events or projects she can. No matter big or small, near or far, there is always something to be done.

Assists the Maid of Honor in carrying out any of her duties & hosting the bridal shower.

Knows the timeline and schedule of events for the day.

Enjoys the day.

In addition to bridesmaid duties, a Maid/Matron of Honor has a few other traditional customary roles.

MOH:

Hosts a bridal shower or some soiree to celebrate.

Emergency contact person for groom, bridal party, family, vendors.

Organizer. You need to know the timeline, schedule for the day & the key players (bridal party & vendors). In the absence of a coordinator, the MOH is the go-to girl. (As a photographer, if there is no planner or coordinator, I tend to rely on the MOH for important details and questions so that I am not overwhelming the bride with Q&A on her wedding day.)

Make sure the Bride has everything she needs & keep her upbeat & stress-free.

In charge of the rings & holding the bouquet during the ceremony.

Responsible for a toast/speech at the reception.

These are just my opinions (and a few “traditional” etiquette duties) on how to be supportive & awesome based on my personal experience as a bridesmaid, MOH and wedding photographer around bridal parties all day. And I may be partial, but I’m pretty positive I have the best brides & bridal parties there are!
