Although I have never been to ‘Nawlins’ for Mardi Gras, I enjoy Fat Tuesday, Maundy Thursday, loads of shiny beads, creole spices, cajun crawfish & King Cake. (Just be very very careful to not bite into the baby, ouchie). I don’t particularly care for the raunchy Mardi Gras that we have all come to know & see on Girls Gone Wild, but instead the REAL Mardi Gras – which by the way is French for Fat Tuesday (aka Shrove Tuesday) & refers to the eating fatty foods & confession the day before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras is the “last hurrah” before the Lent season.
In celebration here are a few images I took at Carnival in St. Maarten two years ago. Which by the way, is just getting underway in some of my favorite islands and it is Brazil’s biggest holiday (I also hear it has become one of the most dangerous times to be in Rio). Carnival is our Mardi Gras, but seems to be on a much larger scale. It also reminded me that I have never blogged (on this blog at least) about my time in the Caribbean & all it’s glory so that’s something I definitely have to share soon, starting with my Carnival experience! I was fortunate enough to see Carnival on several different islands, but of those I saw – St. Maarten/Martin had the best parade, costumes & food!
